Broken Embraces, a movie about illicit love, comedy, dark secrets and self-reflexive cinephalia, is another of Almodovar’s extraordinary creation, illustrating his cinematic personality. A film that combines comedy, melodrama and secrets, is an ode to cinema for its ability to capture and immortalize beauty.
A rather perplexing experience to begin with, the film encircles Mateo who is a blind screenwriter now and the flashback which showcases Mateo Blanco’s life as a film director and his love affair with Lena, the other star. Lena who is Ernesto’s mistress in the movie, is a financer for Mateo’s film and during this film making, they get close and start spending time together. Then Ernesto’s son, after a 14 year long period, takes the stage, by following his father’s instruction to follow the two, and film a making of a doc. Thus, making a film appear within another, a concept which is head-spinning sophisticated and keeps the director’s sheer energy, appear fresh and alive truly.
Almadovar, who has always managed to bring together elegance and exuberance, does the same in his latest classic, “Broken Embraces”, which is a rich, enjoyable piece of work. An excellent cast which has worked up to the expectations of the audiences, Penelope Cruz (Lina), Louis Homar (Mateo Blanco), Blanca Portfolio (Judit), José Luis Gomez (Ernesto Marte) play as the leading cast.
Broken Embraces, a deeply invigorating, impressive and tragic film, like other of Almodovar’s creations, redefines relationship and situations and is an elegantly made movie. The action unfolding two eras: flashback and present day, gives a pleasure which is pure and all set to leave a memory for lifetime.
The movie with 4 stars review has been rated R for the language, sexual content and usage of some drugs, which for below the 18 years of age viewers should be watched only under Parental Guidance.
