Movie Review : The Time Traveler’s Wife
Not your usual sci-fi journey, The Time Traveler’s Wife is more about the emotional impact of dealing with time travel than the paradoxical theory or displaying a future of floating skateboards and shoes that automatically adjust to the size of your feet. This story is about the struggle between love, and fear of loss, and sometimes explores other deeper questions such as who we are and brings to light a whole new series of ‘what ifs’ in a genre that’s not quite science fiction, but it’s not quite…well, not…either.
Rachel McAdams stars as the beautiful Clair Abshire, a paper sculpture artist and a librarian in Chicago named Henry DeTamble, played by Eric Bana. DeTamble sufferes from a rare genetic disorder that causes him to travel back and forward in time, eventually given the name Chrono-Displacement Disorder. The couple meet officially for the first time at the library where Henry works. Clair has known Henry all of her life, speaking to him on multiple occasions from his sojourns into the past, although Henry has no recollection of it. The film also stars Michelle Nolden, Arliss Howard and Ron Livingstone.
The musical score for the film was composed by Mychael Danna, and while is excellent has the unfortunate habit of trying to work a little too hard to evoke each emotion, rather than just providing the backdrop and letting the viewer experience the emotion on their own. It was recorded last year at Ocean Way Studios by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.
It it certainly a movie worth seeing, maybe even more than once, with certain aspects that are quite entertaining, such as the fact that since Henry cannot time travel with anything at all, and he arrives naked and has to procure clothing through unusual means. He also learns how to survive in unfamiliar settings, and times, and can contain a message about the strength of humanity to do the seemingly impossible, such as time travel, but the frailty of the race to be able to cope with loved ones being separated from us or in constant danger.
