Espanyol captain Daniel Jarque died of heart failure at 26 years of age, near Florence, Italy. Jarque was found unconscious in his hotel room of August 8 and could not be resuscitated after being taken to a local hospital.
Daniel was in town during the season of training camp for the Espanyol’s exhibition match in Bologna, August 9. The game has since been canceled and the team is flying back to Barcelona.
On its website, Espanyol said: The doctor carried out CPR on the player and used a defibrillator, which showed that the arrest was non-responsive. After a few minutes, the first ambulance arrived from the Florence emergency services, who tried again with the defibrillator they carried. The medical services continued carrying out CPR, administering adrenaline and atropine for an hour. But the player’s heart did not react, so finally that determined his death.
According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Daniel had been chatting on the phone with his girlfriend, when suddenly fell unconscious. Then, immediately alerted officials of the club. Meanwhile, the Spanish football team Real Madrid and Barcelona, who is touring the United States, sent their respects.
“That such a young man, a great professional and sportsman, has suffered this has left us very upset. Our sincerest condolences,” Real Madrid captain Raúl told reporters. “We are greatly dismayed by this tragic event and we deeply regret it,” said Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
